Social and educational researcher with 25+ years across World Bank, Ford Foundation, UNESCO and Government of India projects.
Dr. Mukhtar Alam is the General Secretary of Institute for Research in Education and Social Transformation (IREST). He has more than 25 years’ work experience in social and educational research, policy formulation and implementation. Dr. Alam has worked on various research projects funded by the World Bank, Ford Foundation (USA), UNESCO, Action Aid (UK), Christian Aid (UK) and Government of India. He has travelled extensively throughout the country conducting research on social justice, food security, education and geoeconomics.
Dr. Alam has provided policy and technical advice and support to the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India regarding ‘Performance based Budgeting’, ‘Teachers Recruitment Policy and Method’; and ‘Subject-wise Teacher-Student Ratio’. He has been consistently working on learning outcomes, structured classroom resources (SCR), subject-specific pedagogy, training modules, cascade mode of teacher training and institutional strengthening. Dr. Alam is well versed in qualitative and quantitative research methods, including monitoring and evaluation, institutional research, participatory and action research. He has extensively worked on micro-finance, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) formation and mobilization, financial inclusion of the rural poor and sustainable livelihoods.
Dr. Alam has received higher education (Ph. D. M. Phil and M. A) from School of International Studies (SIS and School of Social Science (SSS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi; and Honours degree from Patna University. He has published widely in national journals, has published many scholarly books. One of the acknowledged books of Dr. Alam is “Economic Development and Contemporary Geo-Politics: The Indian Ocean Rim”. He has organised a series of national and international seminars and workshops.
